Molecular Diagnosis of Cancer

Lesson Overview With the rapid discovery of cancer-causing genes, this area of research is providing new tools in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this lesson, students will be introduced to the cancer-causing genes and learn how these genes create a cancerous cell.

Goals and Objectives

Students will be able to 1. Discuss the roles of cancer genes in the creation of a cancerous cell. 2. Identify the specific changes to genes to create a cancer-causing gene. 3. Predict how cancers can be diagnosed on the basis of the gene mutations that give rise to cancer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may have preconceived notions that a. Most cancers are caused by the inheritance. b. That cancers can be due to "a" cancer gene.

The Lesson

An exploration of the cell cycle and its regulatory controls reveals how gene mutation can give rise to cancer.

Preparation Before class: (materials, handouts etc.)

Go to http://ic.dev.dnalc.org/p/22 to watch the animations and videos found at the Dolan DNA Learning Center's "Inside Cancer" website.

Go to www.cancer.gov and search for "molecular diagnosis". Read the slides before coming to class.

During class
