Cell and Cancer
From Inside Cancer Wiki
Lesson Overview
Students will brainstorm ideas about the genetics of cancer. Students Students will watch Cells and Cancer presentation. Students will use information to write to a professor applying for a research position, or students will write to professor to gather more information to help a family member cancer, or students will generate a power point on how a cancer cell reproduces genetically.
Goals and Objectives
Goal: To learn about genetics by exploring the genetics of cancer.
Objective: 1) Students will use information to write for a research position. 2) Students will write professor for additional cancer information. 3) Students will generate a power point of genetics of cancer.
Common Misconceptions
Cancer is not genetically based Cancer does not invade cells Cancer does not spread Cancer is contagious Cancer can be caught by kissing
The Lesson
Preparation Before class: Download Cells and Cancer Presentation
Anticipatory set
Think pair share about causes, how many people know someone affected by cancer, and how is cancer spread
5 minutes
Round Robins about genetic transcription and translation and how cancer plays into this.
5 minutes
Check Answers as precursor to Cell and Cancer presentation
Describe the activity.
To use computer to present Cell and Cancer presentation. 30 minutes
Jigsaw - Groups with five students are set up. Each group member is assigned some unique material to learn and then to teach to his group members. To help in the learning students across the class working on the same sub-section get together to decide what is important and how to teach it. After practice in these "expert" groups the original groups reform and students teach each other.

Alternative Assessments
Students will use information to write for a research position. Students will write professor for additional cancer information. Students will generate a power point of genetics of cancer.

STANDARD 3: LIFE SCIENCE Benchmark 2
The student will
1. ▲ understands living organisms contain DNA or RNA
as their genetic material, which provides the
instructions that specify the characteristics of
organisms.
1. a. Nucleotides (adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine and uracil) make up
DNA and RNA molecules.
b. Sequences of nucleotides that either determine or contribute to a
genetic trait are called genes.
c. DNA is replicated by using a template process that usually results in
identical copies.
