Lesson Overview

Adjuvants for Cancer Therapies and Laboratory Tests

Goals:

The student will be able to recognize specific laboratory tests for various cancers and be able to interpret laboratory results

I. What is the role of an adjuvant?

II. Find drugs that are used in cancer treatments and explain how they work. (exercise using the internet, 30” to 1’; need to find a minimum of 4 drugs)

III. View presentation on http//:www.insidecancer.org

IV. Research the laboratory tests needed to aid in the diagnosis of cancers (what do they detect; use text and internet; minimum of 7 lab tests with their interpretations)

V. Lab: perform PSA, AFP, Ca-125, CEA, ALP,HCG, 5’nucleotidase assays on instrument using 5 patient samples and interpret results (2-3 hours)

VI. Homework assignment: student presentation on any lab test for any cancer with the methodology, demonstration of how to perform assay, interpretation of results (include false positives, false negatives and interferences of assay) presentation should be 20-30 minutes in length
