Mechanisms of cell signal transduction and how it affects cancer

Lesson Overview

Understand the topic of cell signal transduction, the types of communication cells are involved in, and how mutations in these pathways can lead to cancer.

Goals and Objectives Understand the process of signal transduction, extracellular and intracellular signal transduction Learn about the types of communication Learn about the types of receptors involved Understand how the nucleus is important in regulation of signals

The Lesson Preparation Before class: handouts in the form of powerpoint notes must be provided. Sourcing for animations on cell communication must be compiled so that it can be shown at the relevant time in the lesson.

Describe any pre-class preparation necessary for the lesson.

During class and time required

5 mins – review the previous lesson key points 5 mins – find out from students prior knowledge on the topic to see where they stand 5 mins – introduction into key aspects of lessons, what topics will be covered 20 mins – direct instruction on key points of signal transduction 5 mins- students’ break 20 mins – get students to read about article on cancer, discuss with them the main causes of cancer in Singapore 20 mins- correlate how cell signal transduction affects mutations in cells and in turn causing cancer. Cover aspects on relationship between the growth factors and receptors and how this is integral in one of the main mechanical causes of cancer. 5 mins – summary of key points in lesson on signal transduction

Student Handouts for the Lesson Plan Provide article on combating cancer from famous people, to make the topic relatable to the students.

Alternative Activities

Explore some websites on cell signal transduction. Critically review the websites on the effectiveness and relevance to lesson.

Suggestions for Extended Learning

Suggest higher level reference books for differentiated learners. For slower learners, refer and guide them with animations websites.
