Pelayo's Lesson

Lesson Overview Causes of Cancer.


Goals and Objectives

Target population: High School students.

Goal: Identify the causes of cancer.

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to; Objective 1. List three causes of cancer that may be affected by one's lifestyle. Objective 2. State the percentage of cancer mutations that are inherited. Objective 3. State how the incidence of lung cancer in women parallels to that of men. Objective 4. List the three major categories of gene types. Objective 5. Report on diet factors that may lead to cancer. Objective 6. Define Alflotxin and how it can lead to cancer. Objective 7. State how many women will have an HPV infection during their lifetime. Objective 8. Describe how sunlight afects skin cancers.

Common Misconceptions

Men are more likely to develop cancer from smoking than women.

Describe any pre-class preparation necessary for the lesson.

During class

Provide three study scenarios on individuals who may be at risk for developing cancer. Break up into three groups and have them develop a teaching plan for each scenario on the causes of cancer.

Time required

15 minutes.

Scenario 1. A 16 year old who is visiting with his uncle who has just returned from Iraq and has taken up the habit of smoking.
