The Worst Mutant


Lesson Overview

This lesson plan is in progress! The intent of the lesson is to make an analogy using the Hallmarks of Cancer and a mutant (think X-men).



Goals and Objectives

To engage students in the lesson using a familiar concept (Mutants) To help students become familiar with the major components that lead to cells becoming cancerous.

Common Misconceptions

Cancer only affects the old and weak and those who smoke at least one pack of cigarettes a day for a 'long' time. Cancer is not genetic. Cancer can not be caused by a virus. Cancer cells just acquire the ability to grow and divide without control. Cancer is caused by just one random mutation.

Preparation Before class: (materials, handouts etc.)

Be sure you go through the slides yourself before you go through them with your students.

During class

Introduce the concept of 'mutants' by asking students what they think of when they hear the word 'Mutant'. Common replied will include Spiderman, X-Men characters, and other 'mutant' characters found in current media. Time required

Time spent going through the slides will depend on the detail you go into for each slide (whether or not you skip slides) and how many questions come up from the students.
